What Is a Car Diagnostic Check?

A car diagnostic check is how a garage finds the cause of a warning light or a fault you can feel but cannot see. It combines an electronic scan of the car's on-board systems with a hands-on inspection to confirm what the scan suggests.

This guide explains what happens during a diagnostic check, what it can and cannot tell you, and when it is worth booking one.

The scan: reading fault codes and live data

The technician connects diagnostic equipment to the car's on-board diagnostics port and reads the fault codes stored by the engine management system. Each code points to a system or circuit the car has flagged — sensors, fuelling, ignition and related systems.

Live data adds context: the technician watches sensor readings in real time while the engine runs, which shows whether a sensor is reading wrongly, responding slowly, or dropping out altogether.

The inspection: confirming the cause

A fault code is a clue, not a verdict. A code pointing to a sensor circuit could mean the sensor itself, its wiring, or a related component — so the technician inspects the relevant parts visually and road tests the car where the symptoms need it.

This is the step that turns a code into a diagnosis. Only once the cause is confirmed do we explain the repair and agree it with you.

When to book a diagnostic check

Book one when a dashboard warning light stays on — especially the engine management light — or when the car develops a fault you can feel: loss of power, starting trouble, strange noises, or a change in how it drives.

It is also worth booking if a warning light comes and goes. Intermittent faults still store codes, and catching them early usually means a smaller repair than waiting for the fault to become permanent.

Diagnostic checks at our Birmingham workshop

If a warning light is on or something does not feel right, call 07961 404768 or message us on WhatsApp. We are open 24 hours. We will scan the car, inspect to confirm the cause, and explain your options before any repair is agreed.

Frequently asked questions

What happens during a car diagnostic check?

We connect diagnostic equipment to the car's on-board diagnostics port and read the fault codes stored by the engine management system. We then study live sensor data, visually inspect the relevant parts, and road test the car where needed. The scan points to the system at fault; the inspection confirms the actual cause.

What can a diagnostic scan find?

A scan can reveal stored fault codes from the engine management system, live readings from sensors around the engine, and faults the driver cannot feel yet. It covers warning-light causes such as sensor failures, ignition and fuelling faults. What it cannot do alone is prove which part has failed — that needs the inspection that follows.

How long does a diagnostic check take?

The scan itself is usually quick — the equipment reads the codes and live data in minutes. The inspection and road test that confirm the cause take longer, depending on the symptoms. We will give you an idea of the time involved when you book, based on what you describe.

My warning light comes and goes. Is a check still worth it?

Yes. Intermittent faults still store fault codes in the engine management system, so a scan can catch what the car recorded even when the light is off. Finding the cause while the fault is still occasional usually means a smaller repair than waiting until it becomes permanent.

What affects the cost of a diagnostic check and repair?

The check itself covers the scan, the inspection time and any road test needed to confirm the cause. The repair cost then depends on the fault found — a sensor costs less to replace than a deeper engine issue, and labour varies with how accessible the part is. We quote after the cause is confirmed.
